Clickable Map

I wnat to make a 'clickable map of the UK that will show local astrology groups in the 'area' that is clicked. I have no idea where to begin and wondered if anyone knew of any software I could use to do this?

Hi Astro! emoticon

Maybe a guestmap is what you need. There are some services that host them online for free, like this one (it was the first one I came across through Google) or Google for other guestmaps.

If you have your own website that supports PHP, you could put your own guestmap up. Here's the first one I found. You can use your own background picture and icons, which can be handy if you only want a map of the UK. More from Hotscripts.com.

I hope this helps you find what you need. emoticon

Thanks LG, I have never heard of guest maps before. I'm going to take a good look at these after work. I may be back with more questions if that's OK emoticon
THanks again emoticon

You're very welcome, Astro! emoticon

Ask as many questions as you need. I'll be back online about 8pm Eastern (4 or 5 hrs behind GMT). emoticon

Me again - hope you dont get too fed up with me. I've Googled Guest Map and I'm not too sure if it's the same as what I have in mind. Have a look here
 as this is the sort of thing I am aiming to do.

Re: Clickable Map

Ah, well that's something completely different than a guest map.  They used client-side "image maps" for that, one on the main page, and one for each region.

To see how they did it, look at their source code and find this:

<map name="Map">
...
</map>

There's a bunch of stuff in between those tags that define the areas to be clicked on.

You can find tutorials on how to make a client-side image map here, here, or google for others.

Each area of an image map works just like a regular HTML link, whether it's to another page or to a different part of the same page.  If you look at your status bar as you hover over the map, you'll see that the links go to the same places as the regular text links to the left of the map.

And don't worry, I'm not even close to being fed up with you. emoticon  If, after reading up a little on image maps, it's something you want to try, don't be afraid to ask more questions.  I'm here to help! emoticon emoticon

I have made a few of these at the local city hall webpages. Quite easy to make if you have a image program that tells you the X/Y coordinates as you mark any area on an image emoticon

www.ifranview.com is a neat program to use in this case emoticon

Don't you mean irfanview? emoticon

I agree, image maps are pretty easy to make. emoticon

I don't actually recommend Paint for editing or saving graphics, but it can easily give you x/y coordinates by hovering over the spot you need the coordinates for, and looking at the bottom-right area of the program.

I use the Gimp for most of my graphics creation and editing, so I've barely touched my own copy of irfanview and don't know all the features it has to offer.

Ifranview is not a great program for really creative graphix creations, and it doesnt make gifs....but as an image tool, it is awesome, once you download all plugins emoticon
