Rick, it seems to me that Dark Matter and Dark Energy would be two forms of the same thing, since matter turns into energy and vice versa. The real difference, aside from one being mass and the other being energy, is that (theoretically speaking) one attracts and the other repels.
Attraction would be witnessed by observing planets and other celestial bodies orbiting some unseen mass (matter). Repelling would be witnessed by observing the expansion of our universe, just as objects are repelled by an exploding bomb (energy). Since you can't see either, "Dark" sounds like as good a description as any.

Yes, it's interesting to think of how ignorant we will appear to future generations, just like believers in a flat Earth as the center of the universe appear to us.
