Free hosting sites

I'm told that I should not be hosting my stuff, (banner, graphics) on a free site like photobucket and that my banner is embedded incorrectly. This is totally greek to me. Can you clarify?

Your banner:

You must be talking about the one on the Africa board:

<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b369/pinkbunnyslippers/Banner1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting" width ="875"></a>

This code creates a link to photobucket, which opens in a new window. If the image goes down, the words "Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting" will show up in its place. For people who use Internet Explorer, those words will also show up when you hover on it.

You might want to change the link to the home page of your board (or if you have a website, definitely link to that instead), or you can leave the link out completely. As for the alternative text, you should change that to alt="Africa - The Lost Board Refugees"

Also, the url of the image has the word "banner" in it. A lot of popup blockers these days will block any image with that word in it, so you should re-name it.

Free hosts:

Even though I pay for a website and could easily host my images there, I still host all (or almost all?) of the images for this board at Imageshack, and I very rarely have a problem with it. All hosts will go down from time to time, and the great thing about Imageshack is that all your images get uploaded to different servers, so as long as your images follow their TOS, then you should never have more than 1 or 2 images go down at any one time (if a server goes down), which looks much better than having all your images go down at once.

I did use photobucket for a while for a different board, but I tried imageshack and liked it better. I can't remember why, though. Maybe it had to do with bandwidth and storage limits?

Did this person mention any free hosts in particular that are troublesome for them, and did they say why they find them troublesome?

Re: Free hosting sites

They stated I should host with my ISP. I've checked there home page and can't find where they offer any free ISP hosting in my area. Thanks for clearing that up for me as I was totally confused.

You're welcome, jlbc. emoticon

I don't know about slow, but I wouldn't host images with my ISP, because I wouldn't want to go through the trouble of re-hosting them if I ever decide to switch providers. That said, I just looked at the features list for your particular ISP and it does not list hosting, so it doesn't look like hosting with your ISP is an option for you anyway.

Stick with the free hosts you already have, unless you have trouble with them. In that case, you can click on Moose's link. I didn't click on the link myself, but I think it's safe to say that it'll take you to thread at Runboard Extra with a list of free image hosts. I didn't click, but I did hover. emoticon

Thanks, Moose. emoticon
