Re: IE6 creating errors on website
:-) ;-) :-( :-p :-D
Those are probably about all I would have been able to decipher, with or without the dashes or ^ characters. Then of course, there is internet shorthand like lol and lmao.
I generally use smilies as a substitution for body language, and like to keep them pretty small because it's easier to read posts that way. Even the lmao smiley here is a little taller than I would like, but it's just so good at expressing a good belly laugh!

Yes, they are a substitute for body language. On Anything Goes there is such a lot of silly chatter that the smilies just add to the fun. I do try to keep them fairly smallish but at the same time I don't want to lose detail. And I love them, they make me laugh with their cuteness so I use them. when I'm discussing serious matters I hardly ever use smilies except the snake when I talk about politicians.

Yes, they are very cute, and the snake is a good one for the politicians.

My first computer was a Altair 8000 that I built myself and upgraded from 8k to 48k of memory! No keyboard, no storage, you flicked the switches to program things which you could display on your TV or print out with a thermal printer/teletype!

Flicking switches sounds a lot slower than someone with no typing skills having to search-and-peck on a keyboard. How long did it take you to program a smiley?

It took about 30 minutes for a smiley. I spent almost all my free time for a 3-week stretch coding in a 4k Star Trek game!!!

It all sounds terribly archaic but I can see because of my own training in BASIC, that that early struggle helped you gain the proficiency you have today. I know that learning how a computer worked the way that I did made it a lot easier for me to understand the modern programming techniques like what I'm learning now.

Re: IE6 creating errors on website
I think writing flowcharts helped me with PHP more than the actual programming did. Now I don't actually write out flowcharts, but like to just write the comments first and fill in the actual code afterward.
As for HTML and CSS, it's more like constructing and painting than programming to me. HTML creates the structure, and CSS makes it pretty. When I see either language written out, I just visualize how it would look on the page, the same way other people visualize a scene that's described in a book. Likewise, when I write it, I'm just describing how I want it to look.
