That's a weird one, but I think I found the answer here.
I couldn't find the file following his link, but found it through Google here. I don't know anything about this file or its source, so you might want to run a scan on it and maybe read up some more on it before executing it.
Btw, love the wallpaper.

Thank you Lesa, I don't know how you knew what to look for but I am very glad you knew  I did a download, scanned it with both my virus and spyware scanners and it came up clean so after reading up on it I tried it and it fixed the trouble as advertised
Just finished a complete system maintenance and back-up on the system and all is well again. The wallpaper is called "Ghost Ship" and it is one of my favorites as well

You're welcome, Rick. I have no idea what caused the sidebar, but I'm glad the file was able to get rid of it.
In my search for the answer, I used quotes around "blue sidebar", "folder tasks" and "other places", and threw xp in there for good measure. I found a few people asking the question without getting a good response (and sometimes no response at all), but was lucky enough to stumble upon the answer.
