Browser compatability

There's been a few sites that I visit with YouTube being the latest that says they are dropping support for browsers except the ones they list. I have a feeling that the listed ones must be paying for that in some way. Eventually, the pile of browsers out there will get thinned down to the ones that will pay to play.

A good thing or bad thing?

I think it's a bad thing. I'm using google Chrome now and if YouTube doesn't work with it I'll be rally irritated. I have to go into Firefox to download videos because Delicious doesn't work with Chrome. emoticon

Re: Browser compatability

I highly doubt they pay. There are just so many differences between browsers that the more complicated something is, the more difficult it is to get it to work in all browsers.

Take the 'insert at cursor' function Thor just added to the posting screen here, for example. After you click on a smiley or code button, the script says to give focus to the textarea. In layman's terms, that basically means, "stick the cursor back into the big posting box." In some browsers, the cursor goes to the end of the code you just inserted and makes it easy to click one button right after the other without having to click inside the box to reposition the cursor every time. But in FF, I've noticed that, if there is enough text in the textarea (box) and you insert something in the middle of your post, the cursor will go to the bottom after insertion, while the textarea scrolls up to the top.

I'm going to see if there's a script to make it work in FF better soon, but this is my point. We could fix it for FF, but how does it work in Opera, Safari, Flock, mobile devices, and every other browser out there, and what scripting will be required to support each of those? With different browsers having different default behavior for the same javascript functions (not to mention how they all treat CSS differently), it becomes too much if you have to detect all the different browsers out there and write the same function multiple ways for all these different browsers.

Of course, the best thing would be if all the browsers worked the same behind the scenes but when you use one that has features that you like, it's a pain in the ass to get used to a new one and transfer all your favorites over to the new one.

There's a lot of people that have no idea the amount of trouble you go through to try to please as many browsers as you can, so on behalf of them, this is from all of us - emoticon You're the best Lesa!

You're too kind, Skokey. Thanks. emoticon

I agree, it would be much better if all the browsers could follow the same standards.

Yes, here's a emoticon from me too.

Oh yes, when you add a smiley in Chrome, it puts the smiley in but leaves the cursor before the smiley code, so I click on the down arrow to get it to move. It's not a problem. emoticon

Darned browser differences.

While we're on the topic:

If all the big sites start breaking in IE6, I wonder if those left using it will finally upgrade.

Then again I also have W98... well I did couple years ago update to SE emoticon

The nasty thing is we'll have IE6 at work for who knows how long. I doubt they'll do anything about it this year emoticon

5 or 5.5? Either one is bad, but 5 is worse. Is it impossible to install IE8 on 98SE? Have you looked into other browsers like FF or Chrome?

The print shop was still using IE6 when I left about 4 weeks ago, and they'll probably keep that for a while to come. At least the PC I was using also had FF, Safari, and Flock. The Mac had multiple browsers, too, but one of them would work on more modern sites.

I know you can go to IE7 with 98SE because I helped Murdochs Aid do that about a year ago. I also discovered a way to get YouTube to play in 98SE for her so her Titanic board could allow the YouTube embeds but there really does come a time when it is easier to upgrade to the modern OS and browsers than it is to fix/hack the older ones.
