Uploading images directly from the board.

Hi Lesigner Girl,

Couldnt find this particular query anywhere after doing a search, so hoping very much you can help emoticon

Is it at all possible to add the option in, or onto, the post/reply box that would contain a link to a image hosting site which when clicked opens up a new window over the current one, allows a user to browse for picture files on there pc, then when a upload button is clicked it saves the uploaded pic to the Image hosting's server but automatically adds the link into the text body of the post back here at the cursor, and then the window would close.

[if all that makes sense emoticon ]

The particular image hosting site which offers this option is here

Postimage

But they dont seem to have anything which is compatible with runboards AKBBS coding, as far as i know anyways emoticon

There method seems to be to add the code via the customize language settings and into the msgform_message box, changing the word 'message' thats currently displayed up on the left hand side of the text area to a 'Add Image To Post' link.

Ive tried adjusting postimages code to comply with runboards layout plus keep within the 200 character limit, and so far ive managed to get it to do everything else except this one particular option, although my knowledge of coding is virtually zero so more hit and hope really emoticon

But after several [thousand] emoticon different attempts at it [including, as a last resort, the option of shouting 'WORK YOU BAS***D' emoticon , which surprisingly failed btw emoticon ]

ive finally decided 'sod it now emoticon '

and thought id ask an expert instead emoticon ,
[which i should of done in the first place emoticon ]

So i would certainly be very grateful if you could shed some light on it all and let me know if the option can be added or not, via this, or any other different method.

Many thanks for any help,

Scott

Welcome to Illusia, Scott! emoticon Your post gave me a good chuckle. emoticon

I just mentioned this to Thor (the head honcho of Runboard), and we're going to talk this evening about the possibility of integrating it. Thank you for showing me that site. If we can use it, it will help a lot of our board owners and members. emoticon

I'll get back to you here and let you know how it goes. Keep your fingers crossed. emoticon

Many thanks for your welcome and quick reply Lesigner Girl emoticon emoticon its very much appreciated indeed emoticon

I will certainly keep an eye out for any updates on this then and yes, it would definitely be quite handy to have as an option.

Got no idea what this 'Postimage' site is really like as a picture host as ive been using Photobucket for the last few years, but they seem ok enough and a fellow board owner i know, that i also do admin duties for used this on a former website he helped run [which was outside of runboard] so all credits to him really, as thats where i heard about the idea.

btw, He also tore his hair out like me trying to imply this in on the settings too, so we are both as bald as a coot now emoticonImage

If anything though its handy to know about another free picture hosting site I guess but if yourself and Thor do like the idea and can find a way of integrating the option here on runboard then that would be fantastic.

So many thanks again for your reply LG, and will keep my fingers crossed like you said.Image

All the best

Scott

That looks like a good idea, very similar to what the Australian X-Trail board implemented using Photobucket and it would be cool to provide board owners with a choice on which image hosting service they would use for their own board. emoticon

You're very welcome, Scott. emoticon We'll need to check into this service to make sure they won't throw us any surprises down the line, but if your friend has used it and would still recommend it, this gives me hope. emoticon

Rick, I like what Jalal did there, but one thing that looks really good about Postimage is the fact that it automatically inserts BBCode into posts when the image is uploaded, making it even easier for the less experienced. emoticon

Re: Uploading images directly from the board.

Hello,

Scott's friend here. I'm also named Scott just to help confuse things. My history with using Postimage dates back around 4 years now. This was on a non-Runboard forum granted so my experience is not totally applicable and this forum of which I speak is no longer active so I can't point you there to see how Postimage works. That forum was phpBB powered in case you are curious.

I can relate that it functioned very well, with my only complaint being that occasionally was slow to respond but it always got the job done. Such is life with using a free service. 95% of the time it worked as fast as my computer would allow it to. The beauty of the Postimage option is that it does embed the code directly into the post body which is quite desirable as I've grown tired of seeing my esteemed forum members butcher the copy and paste method so many times and in so many ways. Postimage can also easily be configured to embed thumbnails as the default option which is also preferable to having someone embed a 3000 pixel wide image.

Both I and the other Scott have been trying for weeks to find a way to adapt this to our board without success. Failing to accomplish this we now humbly ask you for your help. Hoping for a positive conclusion here, and regardless of what comes of this thanks to all of you for hearing us out and for your efforts to make this happen.

You're very welcome, Scott, and thank you for your review of the site.

The reason you can't get it working on your own is because it requires javascript, which board owners/admins can't add for security reasons. However, Thor can add it to all boards, if we like what we see when we test it. He's away on a weekend holiday, though, so we probably won't know until at least Tuesday.

That's a brilliant idea.

Just one thing though, I've seen other boards that have that feature, when your picture is too big, it places a scroll bar around the picture, so that you see a portion of the image but you can scroll up and down and across the image to see more of it.

It would be a great feature, especially for people who don't understand about picture hosting sites and how to get and paste the code from those sites.

ImageShack has a nice desktop uploader that puts your image from your desktop into your ImageShack folder, and then after it's done, it gives you various code options to use.

I've started using that because it's useful and then I keep only the img part of the code.
