Miscellaneous settings/Profile Options

Hi there L.G emoticon

Sorry to bother you again emoticon but just wanted to enquire about the 'LOCATION' box [2nd option down] inside each users misc settings.

Am i correct in saying its function is just a text box or can it be configured in any way like the Avatar box to display pictures?

The main reason for asking is that ive noticed a great feature offered out on a few other community based sites outside of runboard that display's each members national flag.
It does add a nice touch to the profiles i must say and of course its purely optional to each member if they want to display the flag or not but from what ive seen then 99% do.

So i thought it would be a cool option to have on runboard as well. emoticon

I have figured out a way to do it, but only on a per board basis, and using a similar code to that of the custom title one allows you to add a custom flag in just below where it says 'Location' within the profile box,
this is the coding i added in the CSS settings which does the trick.

 .USER NAME HERE .postlistlocation {
  display: block;
  padding-bottom: 30px;
  margin-bottom: 0em ;
background:url(httpUPLOADED PICTURE LINK HERE) bottom left no-repeat;
}

and you then get this...Image

Although it wont show up on that picture above but the flags ive used are animated gifs that have the effect of each one blowing in the wind

HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT THEY DO SHOW UP LIKE

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

The overall effect gives the profile look quite a nice finishing touch IMHO and something that could become a popular choice to have if it was offered out to all.

Which brings me nicely to my problem, and i currently only know of this method in making it work plus originally only offered the option out to other mods + admin on the board so nothing too strenuous involved, but some of the public members have obviously now started to notice these flags and a couple have inquired how they can add one to their profiles, so the big issue is i now fear that i may get bombarded with requests from a high percentage of members all wanting their own custom flag, and with six thousand currently listed board members, plus having to add a separate code for each one thats...............yeah,.............an awful lot of extra coding. emoticon

Basically what im asking L.G is if there is another way within each members misc settings on control panel which would allow a picture link to display other than the avatar option, so at least then it would allow any member if they choose to display his or her national flag, rather than having some daft idiot [yes me emoticon ] to add extra code for everyone who asks for a custom flag.

knowing the profile options are currently being modified as well then if it isnt possible now could it be a possibility in the near future?...................................tomorrow would certainly be handy emoticon emoticon emoticon ..............only joking emoticon

Not sure if a custom flag option is feasible enough to be a global addition on runboard or if Thor would agree to host all 230 currently available flag links himself emoticon
although adding this in as part of a premium membership package may work.

Its a option to concider for the future i guess, but for now anyway Id certainly settle, if possible of course, for that text box thats currently used for writing in your location name within control panels misc settings to also allow picture links to display, that in turn would certainly solve any dilemma i fear may occur in getting bombarded with "can i have a custom flag" requests. emoticon

So Thank You again L.G for any advice you can offer on this as it will be very much appreciated.

p.s
I was going to write this in the 'Feature Requests' forum on RB Support, but thought id check first here to find out if there are any other options available. emoticon

Cheers
and all the best

Scott emoticon

Re: User location field

Hi Scott,

No need to apologize. That's what I'm here for. emoticon

You're correct that it can only be done with CSS, on a per-board basis, and I don't think code will ever be allowed in those fields. If it was allowed, it would be too easy for someone to put, for example, <style>body{display:none;}</style> in there, and every page that person posts on would result in a blank page. This is just one example, and someone could just as easily add a <meta> tag to redirect people to other pages, or do any number of things to other people's boards.

Then again, one safe way for us to offer a flag feature would be to let someone tick a box to show a flag, and it could choose the flag of the country they entered for their registration information. Of course, this also means we would have to host the flag images. I don't know if Thor would want to implement such a feature, but it wouldn't hurt to ask in the Feature Requests forum. emoticon

For now, if you would like to consider adding flags at your board, maybe you could require a certain number of posts or video contributions before you do that for a member, and/or do it for premium users, and/or do it as a custom title. In other words, you could make them earn it somehow, to cut down on how many you would have to add. To see how many posts people have at your board, check out the "Hall of Honor" link at the bottom, then click on "500 biggest posters".

Many thanks for your reply L.G Image

The suggestion you mentioned at the end is funny enough exactly what will now be happening should any more requests go up to have a flag displayed and like you said it will at least cut down adding extra coding in which is currently needed.

Ill certainly raise the topic in the Feature Requests forum over on runboard support, persuading Thor to host 230 gif files may take some doing though.Image
After looking more into how the forums outside of runboard imply this feature then its just like you explained above and a simple drop down box is available listing the country names only [no flag pics are displayed] and after choosing the appropriate one the flag then automatically displays on the profile, however, and just going by the ones ive checked out then as these forums/sites have to host the gif pics as well so its only available to those who are premium members or have donated towards the site.

Before i do put this suggestion on runboard support i just wanted to check on a couple of things first and after reading your answer about not allowing coding in those text areas and looking back at what ive wrote then Image
it doesnt look like ive explained myself very clearly first time around, so im very sorry L.G.

I must confess also that my knowledge of coding i can write on the back of a postage stamp its that little emoticon so could be wrong, but im presuming that you thought i was asking for that text area within the misc settings to allow the same coding that is currently used in the boards css settings ?

If so then soz, as i didnt mean that.

What i did mean [if poss] is if there was any chance of adding another optional box similar to that of the avatar and siggy ones which just display direct picture links.
Then if anyone wishes to use it and display a flag on their profile next to the location name just has to add the direct link in like you do with the avatar display.
This will also remove any hassle of having to host 200 odd picture links or adding separate coding in the CSS settings, as those who then want a flag are more than welcome to do so but they will have to crack on and upload it themselves Image

The only problem using that method is each individual would need the flag to upload in the first place emoticon so other than finding one on the web, or making their own, the easiest method is providing a link to a uploaded zip file which contain the lot and get them from there.
Fortunately that's allot easier than hosting each picture link and ive had premium on rapid for years now so more than happy to upload them and offer a free traffic share link should it be required.

Not sure how easy or difficult this all may be to set up or even if this is at all possible but like i said before i may of mislead you into what i first requested going by your reply so sorry again L.G and hope this makes a bit more sense.

Many Thanks as always

Scott emoticon

More like the HTML header/footer, separators, and custom language set (all of which allow HTML), but it would have made more sense if my mind had gone to simply entering a URL into a box like we do with avatars.

You make a good point about having to host 230(?) flags, but even worse are the added issues of creating them so we don't end up with copyright issues by using someone else's graphics, as well as keeping up with new flags like Myanmar, Malawi, Tokelau, Iraq, and Kosovo, and these were just in the last 2 years. I hadn't really thought that until just now. emoticon

Hi again L.GImage

Very sorry for the lengthy delay in responding to this, and many thanks as well for all the help and info you've supplied as much appreciated.

Yes, thats exactly what i meant, then it would allow each member to use the option or not just like the avatars, plus would take away any of the worries on copyright issues and runboard having to host them all.

If of course runboard did add this in as part of the global options for each member then of course the issues which you mentioned above need to be looked into first.

So if its any use then here are some links which offer animated pre-made flags for use by anyone.
They need to be checked out properly of course as some offer them out to be used for personal pages but not to commercial sites.

http://flags-and-anthems.com/flags/national/index.html

http://www.animationlibrary.com/sc/67/International_Flags/

http://www.wavingflagimages.com/index.php?category=International Flags

http://www.iconbazaar.com/flags/animated/international/index.html

As for keeping up with new flags then its only a problem if your hosting them i guess, but looking through the ones you mentioned L.G and the collection i have then

Myanmar, yep Image

Malawi, yep Image

Tokelau, yep Image

Iraq, no problem Image

and lastly Kosovo,........................... emoticon ...............................errrrImage..............sod it, and i seem to be fresh out of Kosovo ones.

ok hang on a minute .............................................................................................here you go then and just made this myself so its a slightly different style to the others but one brand new animated Kosovo flag emoticon

Image

I acquired all the others a while back, so not my own creation, but making them isnt too difficult.
[if i managed it then that proves it cant be hard emoticon ]

However creating all two hundred, and what ever the exact amount is, custom flags from scratch may take some time and patience to do emoticon emoticon Image

Hopefully one of those sites above can be used to provide them all for free if needed, or even just used as link referrals for anyone wishing to grab one themselves and upload it.
Then if it can be done, having another URL box like the avatar one in the misc settings but next to the location option instead would make that easier option possible.
