George Clooney arrested at anti-Sudan protest
George Clooney arrested at anti-Sudan protest in Washington
"We need humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world," Clooney told reporters just before his arrest.
"The second thing we are here to ask is for the government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them and stop starving them. That's all we ask."
Surely, Clooney's arrest must have helped this cause by raising awareness around the world, and I applaud him for this.
At the same time, this arrest sounds a bit staged. The Secret Service took Clooney and the other protestors away in plastic handcuffs, and some of the protestors arrested were US Congresspeople. In addition, Clooney was a guest at a White House banquet in honor of the British PM, just two days before this incident. Could Obama himself have been in on this, to help the Sudanese people?

I saw it on the news. That's the new thing the police are doing now. It's easier to use cable ties behind the back than those metal things that cut the skin. I know he's been talking about the Sudan thing for a while now. I still think he's going to be doing a political thing.

Ah, thanks for the correction on the cable ties. I wasn't aware of those.

Re: George Clooney arrested at anti-Sudan protest
Clooney has been associated with this cause for quite some time now...I doubt it was staged. And Mo is right, they have been using those plastic 'zip ties' for a while, especially on things like those demonstrations where they have more people than handcuffs and most are non violent.
I applaud Clooney...I hope it brings even more awareness.
A group of US lawmakers and film star George Clooney were arrested at Sudan's embassy in Washington on Friday in a protest at which activists accused Khartoum of blocking humanitarian aid from reaching a volatile border region where hundreds of thousands of people may be short of
food.
Protest organizers said those arrested included US Representatives Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Al Green of Texas, Jim Moran of Virginia and John Olver of Massachusetts - all Democrats. Organizers said Ben Jealous, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and Martin Luther King III, the son of the slain U.S. civil rights hero, also were arrested.
Clooney, his father Nick and the other anti-Sudan activists ignored three police warnings to leave the embassy grounds and were led away in plastic handcuffs to a waiting van by uniformed members of the Secret Service, a Reuters journalist covering the demonstration said.
And he's always been rather outspoken and political....Clooney's humanitarian work includes his advocacy of finding a resolution for the Darfur conflict, raising funds for the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2004 Tsunami, and 9/11 victims, and creating documentaries such as Sand and Sorrow to raise awareness about international crises. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Re: George Clooney arrested at anti-Sudan protest
The Secret Service had 2 feasible options:
1) Let George and the others stay there and protest. They're not a bunch of radicals who would blow the place up or assassinate anyone.
2) Arrest them, drawing the whole world's attention to the protestors and their cause, and probably inspiring more people to protest.
Then again, maybe they were just following protocol.
