Cept when all the so called Witches were killed....the "governing body" did not really have to prove anything.

"Section 8 - Ethnic agitation (578/1995)
A person who spreads statements or other information among the public where a certain race, a national, ethnic or religious group or a comparable group is threatened, defamed or insulted shall be sentenced for ethnic agitation to a fine or to imprisonment for at most two years."

Does that include the Westboro Baptist Church....cause I really could go to jail if I posted what I think about them... emoticon

When so-called witches were killed, the onus would be on the murderers to prove that the 'witches' were casting evil spells, which they wouldn't be able to do, because the 'witches' couldn't have done that. emoticon

Calling WBC disgusting sacks of !@#$ wouldn't be defamation, because it's true. emoticon

That is what is so ironic, they were put to death because of something that the people killing them, did not believe in. So how could so many have been killed, if those doing the killing did not believe they had done anything wrong. And if they did believe they had done something wrong, that would mean they would have to admit that they themselves believed in Magick. And that in itself would make them a witch.

OH...good point! And so true! emoticon emoticon

Many Christians did (and still do) believe in magick, but believing in magick doesn't make them witches. In general (there might be exceptions), they tend to believe magick is the work of Satan.

From about.com:

As the Inquisition proceeded through the 1400s, its focus shifted from Jews and heretics towards so-called witches. Although Pope Gregory IX had authorized the killing of witches back in the 1200s, the fad just didn't catch on. In 1484, Pope Innocent VIII issued a bull declaring that witches did indeed exist and thus it became a heresy to believe otherwise. This was quite a reversal because in 906 the Canon Episocopi, a church law, declared that belief in the existence and operation of witchcraft was heresy.

From page 3:

Christians in medieval and pre-modern Europe believed that Satan was a real being and that Satan was actively involved in the affairs of humans. Satan's goal was the corruption of humanity, the destruction of everything good, and the damnation of as many people as possible in hell. One means by which it was believed he accomplished this was through human agents to whom he gave supernatural powers.

Witches were easily categorized as servants of Satan. No longer merely adherents to a more ancient religious tradition, witches were targeted for prosecution as slaves of the cosmic enemy of God, Jesus, and Christianity. Instead of a healer or a teacher, the witch was made into an instrument of evil. The witch was portrayed -- and treated -- as worse than a heretic. This tactic was not limited to the medieval church's pursuit of witches.

Here's a modern-day believer who seems to believe Harry Pottery and Charmed are works of the devil. I didn't actually read that page, but have read enough quotes from David J. Stewart (not the actor) that I don't think I need to.

And who gave the "right" to any person of the Church, up to and including the Pope to translate or put into law, anything that goes against what was supposedly Gods own words in the bible?

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18 "'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

Exodus 22:18, KJV 1611
Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Wycliffe version, 1382:
Thou shalt not suffer witches to live.

John Wycliffe completed his translation directly from the Latin Vulgate into vernacular English in the year 1382. The Vulgate says "Maleficos non patieris vivere," which Google translates into:

Wrongdoing not allow them to live.

So, it looks to me that John Wycliffe is responsible for a lot of murders over the centuries, because the Latin he translated to say "witches" in English wasn't talking about witches at all. Unfortunately, there are still people in parts of the world who are murdering their own children because they believe them to be witches.

Edit to re-quote:

Although Pope Gregory IX had authorized the killing of witches back in the 1200s, the fad just didn't catch on. In 1484, Pope Innocent VIII issued a bull declaring that witches did indeed exist and thus it became a heresy to believe otherwise.

I'm guessing this is at least part of the reason why Wycliffe translated the verse that way. Want to justify something heinous? Make people believe God told you to do it! Back when books were hand-copied and fewer people were literate, it was so much easier to insert stuff like that into the Bible than it would be today.

Considering the countless facts that they got wrong about biology, the planet, the universe, and too many other things to list, it amazes me that anyone still believes it was dictated by an omnipotent being.

Of course, there are lots of believers who pick and choose what to take literally and still believe in the resurrection, but how do they choose?

Talking snake? Don't be silly. Snakes can't talk.
Half-god rising from the dead to absolve us all from original sin? Sure!

But if the talking snake story isn't true, then what is this original sin they believe in?
