OYE! I'm ashamed to say, I'm from Idaho...

Idaho Anti-Gay Bill Would Allow Doctors And Nurses To Refuse Service To LGBT People On Religious Grounds

A Republican in Idaho, has launched another battle in the war of Religion vs. Sanity.

Representative Lynn Luker has proposed a bill which would protect professionals from being forced to render aid to a gay or lesbian person. Luker has admitted that he did not know a doctor or police officer who had been forced to do so.

“The issue is coming, whether it’s 10 years, or 15, or two years,” said Luker, explaining that the proposal is a “pre-emptive” move.

The measure is backed by conservatives and Christian allies, who say the measure is necessary to protect religious people from losing their professional licenses for refusing service or employment to those deemed in violation of their religious beliefs.

The Cornerstone Family Council has backed Luker’s proposal now awaiting a full hearing, to prevent the state from passing laws to block people from “living out their faith.”

“The free expression of religious freedom is no longer understood for what it was intended,” said Julie Lynde, executive director of the conservative Christian group associated with Focus on the Family. “There’s a double standard against people of traditional religious faiths.”

Pink News adds:
The state of Idaho currently requires professional licences for anyone working as a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, attorney, social worker, fire fighter, police officer, estate agent or insurance provider.

On outlining the measure, Luker noted cases in Oregon and New Mexico, where discrimination cases have been brought against services which refused to cater for gay couples.

Idaho currently has no protections for LGBT people in its Human Rights Act.

Luker’s measure, if passed into law would mean the state could not revoke the license of any professional refusing “to provide or participate in providing any service that violates the person’s sincerely held religious beliefs.”

He denied that he intended to cause harm to LGBT people, however, saying emergency personnel would not be covered by the protections, as it does not allow “the intentional infliction of emotional or physical injury.”

The ACLU in Idaho noted that it could not recall any past issues this bill might address, and described it as “a solution searching for a problem”.

The Kansas House voted 72-49 on Wednesday, to approve a bill aimed at keeping individuals, groups and businesses from being compelled to help with same-sex weddings. Supporters of the bill call it a religious freedom measure but opponents say it will encourage discrimination against gays and lesbians.

A new bill was introduced this week in the Tennessee State Legislature that, if passed, would allow people and businesses to refuse to provide goods and services to homosexuals. The bill was filed by State Sen. Brian Kelsey, who represents Memphis and Germantown.

The bill notes that businesses can refuse services and goods only if it furthers a civil union, domestic partnership, or same-sex marriage. The person or business would just have to say it was against their religion. For example, if a same-sex couple wanted a cake for their wedding reception, a bakery could refuse to cater to them.

MY COMMENT THERE:

Wow....so that means that if a crash victim comes into a trauma center on deaths door, and a doctor and his staff of anti-gay religious people save the gay persons life they will be okay in the eyes of their God, but once the victim comes around and mentions they are gay or lesbian, the hospital must toss them out, or all the nurses, aides, and staff that help later on will be going to hell? A person is a person......we are all HUMAN BEINGS on this little round rock we call the EARTH. Being gay is no different than having blue eyes or blond hair.

It sounds like they'd still have to help in emergencies, but it's disgusting that the GOP are still trying to pass such bigoted discriminatory laws.

He denied that he intended to cause harm to LGBT people, however, saying emergency personnel would not be covered by the protections, as it does not allow “the intentional infliction of emotional or physical injury.”

If a fly lands on Luker's nose, it should be ok to kill the fly with my fist, right? As long as my intention isn't to inflict emotional or physical injury on a person, it should be fine, right?

And I would use my right fist. For his own good, of course. emoticon

This IS 2014 right?

That's what the calendar says on my computer, but I still have to wonder sometimes. emoticon

Well, we are equal opportunity punchers. We don't discriminate against either lefties or righties. emoticon

And I wonder too. These days more than I ever have.... emoticon

This is just their reaction to marriage equality being enacted in so many states.

While the left becomes more and more enlightened, the right is going to keep pushing back, and they're going to end up losing a lot of voters.

My state is not immune to this idiocy.

Republican Official Says Gays Should Be Purged From GOP, Blames Homosexuality On Satan

In the post, Sears claimed that homosexuals prey on children, argued that "Satan uses homosexuality to attack the living space of the Holy Spirit" and advocated that Republicans "as a party should be purging this perversion and send them to a party with a much bigger tent."

Yeah, keep showing your ignorance, Mary Helen Sears. Note that the title of her rant (linked in the quote) is "End Of The GOP?" Yes, Mary, you are certainly helping to ensure the end of the GOP.

The guy is too clueless to realize that re-wording it isn't going to fix anything. Just replace 'same-sex' with 'interracial'. They can't discriminate based on race, and shouldn't be allowed to discriminate based on gender.

I would have guessed he was a woman because of his name, if it weren't for the male pronouns in the article. It doesn't seem weird to me, though, because I have a male cousin with that name. There were also two Stacys in my kindergarten class, and one of them was a boy.

I think it would have been funny, because someone like him would have taken it badly, and he deserves to feel bad for his bigotry. emoticon
