PSPad code editor is safe, but buggy

From their website:

PSPad is a freeware programmer's editor for Microsoft Windows operating systems, useful for people who:

• work with various programming environments
• like highlighted syntax in their source code
• need a small tool with simple controls and the capabilities of a mighty code editor
• are looking for a tool that handles plain text
• want to save time - PSPad offers rich text formating functions
• need a tool that offers user extension capabilities
• want to save money and still have the functionality of professional products because PSPad is free for commercial and government purposes too

PSPad downloads page

They list several places from which to download it, but I used the first one that says "Installer," which led to www.fosshub.com/PSPad.html.

Important note: They do serve a few popups during the installation process, asking you if you want other services, but you can simply click the "Decline" button on them.

Scotty the Windows Watchdog (WinPatrol) gave me an alert, asking if I want to change file associations for .txt files from Notepad to PSPad. Since I did tell it to do that during the installation process, I clicked "Yes" where it asks if the change is ok. Scotty has alerted me about some bad stuff before, but it doesn't look specifically for malware. It alerts us when a program tries to make a change to our system, and it is up to us to determine whether it's a change we want or not.

For those who know me, I used to use Crimson Editor, but they stopped developing that in 2008. Emerald Editor took it over from there, but they stopped developing Emerald in 2011. I could still download Crimson again, but I'm giving PSPad a shot. So far, it looks like it has all the same features as Crimson, in addition to other features Crimson didn't have. emoticon

Re: PSPad code editor is safe

I uninstalled PSPad just now, because it's buggy. When I tried to write a simple 'if' statement in PHP, it gave me an error as soon as I typed in a '(', and wouldn't let me go any further. The other day, a similar thing happened when trying to write simple CSS. It took it upon itself to insert an extra }, and whenever I tried to remove it, I kept getting an error and it wouldn't let me remove the }.

I have just installed CodeLobster as a replacement. A VirusTotal scan came out clean, and I didn't get any warnings when I installed it, so I'll create a new topic for it after I give it a good test run.
