my nephew's parents brought him up Catholic. When his brother declared himself atheist to an audience of 45,000 on youtube, his dad commented "he says he's an atheist" as if it is just a phase he's going through

If a child is born Catholic and baptised Catholic as a baby he is Catholic for life according to their church. That is why is father probably said that because his father made sure he was Catholic for life when he was a baby. Your nephew has chosen otherwise, but his father doesn't see it that way.

I liked the dog in the wedding, too.

Since I am not Catholic, I have no clue. LOL

I just have known Catholics that were upset by this.

PS: I figure if the person himself takes himself away from Catholicism, why bother looking back.

It is sort of like being baptized Mormon by proxy. If the real person does not want it they should just ignore it.

It was kind of a joke. If you don't believe in an institution, the fact that someone says you are a member should be meaningless to you. That whole Mormon by Proxy thing always made me chuckle as does anyone telling me I'm going to Hell. I just don't get people being upset about things like that.

I see religious labels as a way to summarize one's beliefs. If someone's beliefs don't fit into that label, nobody else should try to push that label onto them. Unfortunately, labeling oneself with a particular denomination still isn't adequate, because not every Catholic believes all of the same things, not every Baptist believes all of the same things, etc.

'Atheist' should be an adequate label for anyone who doesn't have a positive belief in any gods, because it only means we are not theists. Unfortunately, too many people believe it means a positive belief in no gods, and many will claim we believe things that aren't even included in that label.

There simply should not be labels....just individual people doing as they please, as long as no one else gets hurt.

I agree. Labels can actually lead to people getting hurt.
