The science of kindness

This video helps explain how empathy has helped our ancestors survive and evolve into humans.

Wealthy Americans Are Giving Less Of Their Incomes To Charity, While Poor Are Donating More

Unlike their wealthier counterparts, low- and middle-income Americans — those who made less than $100,000 — gave 5% more in 2012 than in 2006, the Chronicle found. The poorest Americans — those who took home $25,000 or less — increased their giving by nearly 17%.

“Lower and middle-income people know people who lost their jobs or are homeless, and they worry that they themselves are a day away from losing their jobs. They’re very sensitive to the needs of other people and recognize that these years have been hard,” Palmer says.

I totally believe we are born kind. Ever witness babies in an ICU or infant ward. They reach out to each other when one is crying....

Hatred, anger, are taught....when we are born we are a blank slate.
Be careful what you write on your child's slate board...it may come back to haunt you.

And I also believe that the middle and poor give more than the wealthy....because we KNOW what it feels like to go without. And we KNOW how good it feels to get, give and love. We have nothing to fear.........we are not so rich that people will search us out.

I think some people are born without the capacity for empathy, but for the most part, I agree. Everyone is also born without any concept of a god. A lot of religious people believe that a god plants goodness into our hearts, but all that is is empathy, which is something humans acquired through evolution.

Exactly... emoticon And I have strangely enough, found that you can go back to some sort of innocent kindness if you toss out a lot of "conditioned responses"...

I agree. Leaving the environment that conditioned you can help you get rid of that conditioning. Just ask former pastor Ryan Bell. That's not to say he wasn't kind when he was a believer, but taking a year away from religion helped him look at things more clearly and not be afraid to admit when he doesn't know something. emoticon

The hard part, is taking that first step away. Knowing in your heart you will be ridiculed, and you will scare people out of your life, even some family. But having the courage to take that step anyway. emoticon

I was ridiculed in school when I was trying to fit in, and became my own person in adulthood when I stopped worrying about that nonsense. I think it helps that I wasn't raised in a bigoted family, though, and didn't form any bonds through any church, so I didn't have to worry about losing anyone who was important in my life. Well, I do have one biological uncle who is bigoted because of his religion, but it was easy to disown him, and on the rare occasion when I do see him, I have no qualms about telling him how I feel or what I believe. If someone doesn't accept me for who I am, then I really don't care what they think about me.

I became FREE when I realized that what any one else thought of me, did not really matter. I am kind, caring and understanding. But, I can also be pigheaded, ornery and a real !@#$. I accept this about me, and if others can't....then the problem would be theirs, not mine. I accept me.
I was raised in a bigoted family. But they were bigoted because they were raised that way, and no one was different. So they saw the world through their ancestors eyes....
But when one dared to break away, (me) and do things differently, including not having my son baptized, not believing in "GOD", or Jesus or following the Bibles teaching. And they saw that.....WOW! I was even kinder, more understanding, less stressed and a lot more fun to be around. They began to look at things differently.
My husband does not believe my path...but he is no longer a Roman Catholic.....my parent still will call Black people the "N" work and still put down Mexican people....but they are learning. They no longer care for church, they say they can talk to "GOD" sitting at a picnic table by the river having coffee and a doughnut. And they do....
And my son is going on to live life without the restrictions of ANY religion....he's doing his own thing and he's happy, comfortable with himself and not only a gentle man, but a gentleman....
I think one just needs to break the circle sometimes. emoticon

You have done well, my friend. emoticon You know I don't share your theistic beliefs, but you have broken away from some pretty harmful beliefs and are continually helping others to see "the light," so to speak. What matters to me is how we conduct ourselves in this life, the only one we know for a fact that we'll have. If I am wrong and there is something after this life, I would only hope there aren't any tyrannical deities controlling the afterlife who would punish us for doing our best in this life. If so, they are not the kind of deity I would want to worship anyway.
