need help with unusual idea

Hi lesigner girl, im not sure if you can help me or not but to understand my question you will need to look at the footer of my board (link in signature)

I want to add realistic looking train tunnels for the affiliate train at each end of the marquee and if possible have the train fade and out of them so it looks like it is going into and coming out of the tunnels. I am just wondering if you have any idea's that can help me achieve this?

Re: need help with unusual idea

Welcome to the Temple, Panther!

I like the effect you have with the train in your affiliates scroller, combined with its location under the time/temperatures, and I like your idea for the tunnels.

For the tunnels, you could nest two <div>s inside each other, putting the scroller inside both divs, like so...

div div marquee /div /div

If you keep the time/temperature display close to the marquee like it is now, you may want to include those inside the divs instead, like so:

div div brisbane melbourne marquee /div /div

Then, you can use inline CSS – or give those divs class names and use your custom CSS area – to put the tunnels in the background of each div. This will cause the tunnels to be behind the marquee, so you'll need to set the left and right margins of the marquee just far enough in, so it doesn't overextend the outside of the tunnels.

Using the IE-specific alpha filter, you could cause it to "fade" into one tunnel, although the available "styles" used with the alpha filters make it difficult if not impossible to both fade out of one tunnel and into the other without also fading the top and bottom of the marquee. Also, using the alpha filter, people would only be able to see the fading effect when they are using Internet Explorer, and won't see it on other browsers.

Sample code (copy and paste to your favorite word processor):

<marquee style="margin-left:20px; margin-right: 20px; Filter: Alpha(Opacity=0, FinishOpacity=100, Style=1, finishX=10)">

If this sounds like something you want to try, let me know and I can help you with it. emoticon

Edit:

I just had another thought: On the right, you could have the train come out from behind a mountain. Then on the left, it can fade into a tunnel. This would involve one relatively-positioned div with the cave background on the left, and an absolutely-positioned div inside the relative div, over the right end of the marquee. I can also help you with this idea if you like it.

Re: need help with unusual idea

Great minds think alike emoticon lol I also thought maybe a mountain one side of the marquee. Both your ideas sound great it would be great if you could help me with the second idea, mountain and tunnel (give the fade effect a miss for now) emoticon I am currently looking for a picture of a tunnel entrance that has been taken from an angle so it looks realistic for the train to enter. One thing I really dont want to do is make the page any wider though, this isnt a problem is it?

thanks for your help, its much appreciated emoticon emoticon

You're very welcome, Panther! emoticon

Don't worry, the page won't be any wider. Depending on whether you mind the time/temp displays possibly overlapping and obscuring the upper part of the mountain and/or cave, your page might get a little taller.

Once you find the images you want to use, upload and post the links to them so I can see what we'll be working with. emoticon

Re: need help with unusual idea

what do you think of using a city scape like this one on the right for the train to come out from behind and a tunnel entrance on the left? (if I ever find one!) lol

Image emoticon

found a tunnel

Image

I added the city scape but that messed up the scroll width and I couldnt add the tunnel before the scroll in html footer, it just kept coming up as a red X.

your expertise now would be great, thanks lesigner emoticon

You had some erroneous code in there such as <img src="<img src... and forgot a " at the end of an image url. Also, you had a few </a>s where they weren't needed, and didn't have them where they were needed.

Replace your current marquee, tunnel, and cityscape with this:

<div style="position:relative;height:139px;background:#000 url('http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/4407/tunnel5os.gif') bottom left no-repeat;">

<div style="height:85px;"><br /></div><div style="margin-left:70px;margin-right:295px;"><marquee scrollamount="3">
<img src="http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3208/train75di.jpg"border="0">
<a href="http://com2.runboard.com/beautifulpandemonium/"><img src="http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1964/cpban39do.gif" border="0"></a>
<a href="http://com4.runboard.com/bhideousgreengunge"><img src="http://x12.putfile.com/11/32809100138.gif" border="0"></a>
<a href="http://com5.runboard.com/bgraphicsaddicts"><img src="http://img272.imageshack.us/img272/5783/graf0yt.gif" border="0"></a>
<img src="http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6881/train710xt.jpg" border="0" alt="">
</marquee></div>
<div style="position:absolute;bottom:0;right:0;"><img width="298" height="139" alt=""
src="http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9259/cityscape2xn.jpg" /></div>
</div>

I had to use extra <div>s in there to get it working properly on Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Netscape browsers. I don't know about Opera, since I don't have that one.

I would also get rid of the black background on the train images and make the background transparent instead. I can do that for you if you don't have the program to do it with, but once you upload them, they will have different urls and you'll need to change the code accordingly.

Re: need help with unusual idea

cool, god stuff lesigner emoticon thanks very much. I have made some other train images I want to use and I have tried making them transparent but I end up with white dots around the images still so if you could try that would be great, here they are.

Image<--- front

Image<--- back

OK now here is something I thought of that will look really cool if its possible (sadly I dont think it is but I will ask anyway emoticon ).....

Is there any way possible to add the affiliate buttons onto the flat trays on the train so they look like cargo? or can they be centred so atleast they are not sitting on the bottom of the marquee?

thanks again for the much needed help, have a flower emoticon

You are very welcome, and thanks for the flower. emoticon

I tried relative positioning just now to get the banners onto the flat trays, but couldn't get it to work inside a marquee. Sorry.

I can redo the new train images to get rid of the white background, as well as tweak the code to lift the banners off the bottom. That will have to wait until late tomorrow evening, though, since I have to go to bed (it's 3:15 am here) and work 12-8pm tomorrow.

When I redo the train images, do you want me to get rid of the flat beds, since I couldn't find a way to put the banners on them?

See you tomorrow! emoticon

Argggghhh so it works just not in a marquee?? lol Thanks for trying I knew it wasnt going to be easy to achieve, I guess I can always do it the tedious way of adding the flat bed to every single frame of the affiliate animations lol.

You can leave the flat beds on I can always get rid of them down the track (haha)if I want to.

OK until tomorrow, sleep well emoticon
