posticon FAQ: Vertical Marquee fix for Firefox

ImageImageSome of you already know about this problem. You put a vertically-scrolling marquee on your message board and it looks great in Internet Explorer, but you look at it in Mozilla and it scrolls over everything that's below it. emoticon

Well, here's the fix:

If you want your marquee to be, for example, 200px wide and 50px tall, put it in a <div> that is 200px wide and 50px tall, and tell it to hide the overflow. Yep, that's right, it's that simple. emoticon

<div style="height:50px; width:200px; overflow:hidden;">
<marquee>
  Marquee content in here
</marquee>
</div>

If you want a border around your marquee, put it around the <div> instead.

See? I told you it was simple. emoticon

That wouldn't work for the News Fader at ProBoards though, cause it doesn't scroll. It flashes the info instead, so the hidden parts of the info wouldn't be viewable. :dunno: Would increasing the height do the trick? Or would it still drop down past the bottom border?

Re: Vertical Marquee fix for Firefox

ProBoard's newsfader is completely different from a marquee. Marquees are written plain HTML, while the newsfader is in javascript.

I didn't realize Firefox had a problem with the newsfader. I'll take a look at it and see if I can fix it. emoticon

Edit: Thanks to Craig using inline CSS after defining the id on the scroller, there's no way I can change the height on the fader. So... I used CSS that IE doesn't recognize to nudge the text up, but unfortunately Firefox and Netscape vertically center the fader differently. Netscape vertically centers both lines properly as does IE, but Firefox centers the first line, and the 2nd line just ends up below that.

I could use javascript to sniff for browsers and apply CSS accordingly, but I think replacing the whole thing with a vertically-scrolling marquee that stops when the user hovers over it would be much easier to set up and maintain. I'll set up a sample for you so you can check it out and decide if you like it. emoticon

They both look great, but I think I like the right to left scrolling better than the bottom to top scrolling. You can see the message longer. Of course the hover effect also works great for both. emoticon

I'll go ahead and replace the fader with the horizontal marquee, then. emoticon

Thanks! emoticon

There was so much info about ez that I thought it would be better on its own line. Now it reminds me of a NYSE ticker. emoticon

Re: FAQ: Vertical Marquee fix for Firefox

The code worked awesome and it was really simple, thank you. I had kind of given up on the Marquee because I have Mozilla. I was just wondering if it would be super complicated to change the font in the marquee? Please excuse my newbiness. emoticon Thanks in advance.

Re: FAQ: Vertical Marquee fix for Firefox

No need to apologize, Frayedgirl. Getting help with RB customization is what this forum is here for. emoticon

You can change the font properties by changing this line:

<div style="height:50px; width:200px; overflow:hidden;">

and add whatever font or other definitions to it like so:

<div style="height:50px; width:200px; overflow:hidden; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; font-family: verdana,arial,sans-serif;">

... or you can use the shorthand version, which does the same thing:

<div style="height:50px; width:200px; overflow:hidden; font: bold 12px verdana,arial,sans-serif;">

With shorthand, things have to be in a particular order. In other words, the font-weight (bold) must come before font-size (12px), and font-family (verdana,arial,sans-serif) goes last. So if remembering the order is difficult, you might want to stick with the long way, at least for a while.

In either case, change the definitions as you wish. Instead of bold, you could use normal. You might find the rest to be self-explanatory, but don't be afraid to ask if you don't. emoticon
