Re: Atheists: No God, just whining

My friend posted this to his facebook page today. It made me smile. Apparently a Christmas conversation he recently had with his mother.

Mom: "What's wrong with this family? You're all a bunch of Atheists." Me: "You should be proud. You raised a couple of rational thinking intelligent kids." Mom: "Well I didn't mean to."

Poor woman.

Sadly, there's plenty of intolerance and arrogance from both sides.

Re: Atheists: No God, just whining

True. There are too many religious people who claim that their particular god absolutely exists, and things we know without a doubt to be true are absolutely false, just because their ancient storybook says so. On the other end of the spectrum, there are atheists who claim that there is absolutely no god, but they don't even bother to define what they're denying. It makes about as much sense as proclaiming, "Oaisdufaosdifj can't possibly exist, and you are all stupid for believing it does."

Einstein was an atheist by most definitions of the word 'theist' (with atheist meaning someone who lacks theism), but he was always looking for a force or energy that he believed ties everything together, and he referred to this unknown thing as 'God.' By forces, I refer to things like gravity, inertia, chemical reactions, etc, which don't have any self-awareness as far as anyone can tell, but still they "dictate" what will happen in any particular scenario. Who's to say there isn't another force out there like those, but which ties all other forces together? And if it's an all-encompassing force that "dictates" all other forces, then why not call it "God"?

I will go so far as to say that a particular god of a particular religion can't possibly exist as their religion has defined it, and I will also say that I think a self-aware god that is separate from everything else is too improbable to even consider unless evidence comes along to show otherwise. However, I can't rule out the possibility of an all-encompassing energy or force that may tie everything else together, something that has yet to be defined because we just haven't discovered it yet. I also won't say I believe in it since it's never been discovered, but since it doesn't go against everything we do know at this point, I certainly wouldn't rule it out.

No I doubt it Lesa. I think we are just products of evolution and nothing more and the earth is just the same, just is, i don't think there's anything there.
Just my pov.

I knew I probably didn't explain that clearly enough, but I couldn't think of a better way to say it. I'm not talking about something that knowingly guides things. I'm talking about a mindless force, just as gravity and inertia are mindless forces.

Gravity is a force. If you drop something, you know it's going to fall, but you don't know exactly where it's going to fall or how long it will take to land, because there are other factors involved.

Inertia is a force. If something is moving, you know it's going to keep moving until something stops it. Again, we don't know how far it will go or which exact direction it will take, because there are other factors involved.

All I'm talking about is another mindless force that we may not have discovered yet. If it hasn't been discovered, we can't define it.

Let's hope the Large Hadron Collider blows our minds and exposes the ultimate force.

I think it's supposed to go full power next month. Of course it will take quite a while to analyze these high powered collisions but no mater what happens, it should give physics a new direction.

Yes, I agree Skokey.

Lesa I think that the force that we don't know about is sending me messages. My stud roof keeps springing new leaks so I have to keep getting the guy in to fix them, as a result all my books and photos are off the shelves so it's looked like my moving for over a month now.

The the weather in the UK, normally the winters are cold but they have to have the coldest winter in 30 years just when my kids are there.

And the youngest one in Peru, first he forgot to ay his credit card bill, so he hasn't got money and I've had to sort that out for him and now his flights have to be changed because his tour was changed. Although with the amount of travelling he does, it's inevitable that there had to come a time when things didn't fall into place.
