Re:
Good find. I remembered in high school, I was forced to stand up and pledge under god. In my last year, you were not required to stand up and I chose to sit down while all the creationists grill me. Good times.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance to a Secular Nation
Thanks, setsar.
I remember saying the pledge, too, but it seems like my school stopped that when I was in middle school. It wasn't a big deal to me at the time, because I was what I consider a "casual believer" back then. Even though I felt like some of the religious stuff I was taught as a child seemed silly, I hadn't really given it much thought at that point, and just kind of assumed "God" existed.
Now that I no longer believe in any gods, I feel that the phrase, "Under God" diminishes the pledge for anyone who doesn't believe in one, because it feels as silly as saying, "one nation, under the Great Googly Moogly in the sky."

Just curious - What do atheist do when presented a bible in court and asked to swear that the testimony they are about to give is the whole truth, so help them, God? ...or do they not do that anymore. If they do, now that would be a silly. You might as well swear on a stack of pancakes, so help me Aunt Jemima.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance to a Secular Nation
Funny you should ask that, Skokey. When a bailiff asked me that on Thursday, I ignored those last 4 words and simply said, "yes," because I didn't want to seem hostile. There was no Bible involved, though.
I have considered writing a nice letter to the judge, to let her know that the only complaint I have about the proceedings that day was the fact that, while my testimony was true, the oath itself was a lie because of those 4 words.

Getting rid of the bible was a good move. Don't want to upset the Jews and Mulims or any other mono or multi-theist. I wonder if they would hold you in contempt for saying, "So help me Flying Spaghetti Monster"?

Re: Pledge of Allegiance to a Secular Nation
Getting the Bible out of courtrooms is a good first step for reasons you mention, but what about people who believe in multiple gods?
Bailiff: Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
Pagan: Which god?
or
Pagan: Yes, so help me gods.
or
Pagan: Yes, so help me goddess.
or
Pagan: Yes, so help me <name of their favorite god>.
If I didn't care about the outcome of this particular case, I might have said, "No. If I swear upon an entity that I don't believe exists, my oath would be a lie. But I do swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."
