Re: COVERT MESSIAH...interesting piece here.
Of course, I could be wrong.
I don't like it when people base their conclusions on the wrong information, whether their conclusion is right or wrong. When the information is wrong but people believe it's right, it will lead them to the wrong conclusion. Even when their conclusion is right, they can change their mind about the conclusion if they discover that the information that led them to that conclusion was wrong.
In this case, there are so many conflicting stories in the Bible, that I think they can be best described as fanfic, inspired by earlier tales. If they had written them from scratch as part of some master plan, I think the stories would have told a more cohesive, less contradictory tale. I do think Roman authorities added to the existing tales and edited parts to further their agenda ("Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's" to get people to willingly pay taxes, for example), but I don't think they wrote them from scratch.
The end result is the same, of course. Either way, it's still fiction, and those in power at the time did shape the stories to further their agenda.

Never thought of the Bible as Fanfic....but dang, it makes a darned good one! All that plague, hell and damnation, and miraculous conceptions....really a good fanfic!
I am constantly "correcting" WRONG on FB. I literally can not stand when people pass along, forward or share, WRONG information.
I tell them, I'm not standing up for one group or another, for one person or another. I'm standing up for posting TRUTH, even if it hurts! I refuse to let lies, hatred or war mongering to be passed along as truths and "life"....I've had more than one friend...un-friend me.

Lol. I bite my tongue when someone posts an image that says, "Share if you love Jesus!" and other such things, but there are a few times when I've sent a private message to someone who has unknowingly shared a hoax, along with an appropriate link to Snopes or some other site with the relevant information.

Re: COVERT MESSIAH...interesting piece here.
I'm constantly sending the "hoax" links and clearing things up and letting the people know it took me all of 30 seconds or so to find the truth in what they posted...
I bite my tongue when someone posts an image that says, "Share if you love Jesus!"
Because of what I am...I have people "telling" me, that it's "Okay, Jesus loves you."
You have no idea how often I have wanted to post this picture!

Re: COVERT MESSIAH...interesting piece here.
It's hard to keep a straight face when someone says, "Jesus is in me."
I didn't bite my tongue yesterday when a friend posted an image that said, "We don't say Happy Holiday(sic). We say Merry Christmas. Share if you agree."
This friend is religious, but she once told me she agrees that religion shouldn't dictate our laws, and she seemed to understand and agree with the establishment clause of the 2nd amendment. She also knows I'm an atheist, but I've never felt like she was judging me for not sharing her beliefs, and we've always treated each other with kindness and respect. She often posts a few religious things on her wall in a single day, and I may not like or agree with it, but I scroll past them without saying anything because she's entitled to her beliefs.
This graphic was a bit different, though. It may appear harmless to a lot of people, but it actually feeds into this much bigger division between Christians and everyone else that seems to be growing more and more because of misinformation that keeps getting spread, so I felt the need to say something about it.
I responded to that graphic by saying,
I say Merry Christmas to Christians, Happy Hanukkah to Jews, Happy Solstice to Pagans, Happy Festivus to atheists, and Happy Holidays if I don't know what (if anything) the person I'm talking to celebrates.
She responded by saying that some people say 'Happy Holiday' to avoid offending people, but she says 'Merry Christmas'.
It was hard to find the right words to reply to this. It's one thing to offend people. Offending people isn't always a bad thing, depending on the 'offense'. Sometimes, offending someone might be the most effective way to get an important point across, without actually harming anyone. But there's a difference between offending someone and hurting them, and a lot of people are hurt very deeply by always being excluded, mocked, bullied, etc., for being different from everyone around them. I imagine it would be even worse for someone who holds deep religious beliefs that are very important to them, but every day they're reminded by signs, car emblems, jewelry, billboards, churches on every corner, and the people around them that they are different, and the beliefs they base their entire lives on are considered an abomination by almost everyone around them. To them, 'Merry Christmas' might sound a lot like 'Happy White Pride Day' to someone in America who isn't white.
I do believe this friend is kind and caring, and just didn't realize the truly negative effect it could have on some people to hear 'Merry Christmas' all season long. I didn't want to be confrontational, but I felt it important to give her a non-Christian perspective, and hoped it would help her see things differently.
I responded:
I do it out of respect for the person I'm talking to, to give them a little comfort in a country where the majority expect them to believe as they do. I personally don't mind if people wish me a Merry Christmas, and I rather enjoy the family gathering, food, and gift exchange. But some people have their own holidays and their own customs that are just as important to them as Christmas is to you, and it seems a bit odd to see the majority lashing out at the minority, just because the minority wants to be treated with the same respect as the majority.
I am not religious, as you know, so I have no reason to put one religion above another. I only participate in Christmas because my family does, and I do have a nice time, but I would be just as happy to celebrate Solstice instead or in addition to that. Either way, it's just a nice party to me.
I will wish you a Merry Christmas out of respect for you, but out of that same respect, I will not wish my Jewish friends a Merry Christmas.
This was yesterday, and she never responded to it publicly or privately, so I can only guess she decided to drop it to avoid the conflict. I doubt I changed her mind, but I hope it will make her think before she says 'Merry Christmas' to a woman with a dot on her forehead and wearing a sari.

Re: COVERT MESSIAH...interesting piece here.
I have no idea. According to the Indian man I used to work for, Hindus will incorporate different religions into their own. His family worships Jesus along with Krishna and their other gods, and they attend a Christian church, so this particular family does celebrate Christmas. I'm not familiar with any explicitly Hindu holidays, though, and don't know how many Hindus in America worship Jesus.

Re: COVERT MESSIAH...interesting piece here.
I got the same Merry Christmas graphic in my news feed, so it is a mutual friend.
I let it slide completely, because come "Yule"...I'll be posting my own graphics as well as saying, in you own words:
I say Merry Christmas to Christians, Happy Hanukkah to Jews, Happy Solstice to Pagans, Happy Festivus to atheists, and Happy Holidays if I don't know what (if anything) the person I'm talking to celebrates.
Because if I know what they are, I will respect their religion. And respond in kind to their ways.
Unfortunately, many that I say Merry Christmas to, because they are Christians, never say Blessed Yule back to me, even though they know I'm Pagan..
But, after a certain roust with friends over things that I can let go of now, because I am comfortable with how, who and what I am.....I guess I know when to fight my Wars, and let the individual battles go.

Re: COVERT MESSIAH...interesting piece here.
You're more than welcome to use my words in a graphic, if you want to.
Maybe I should put up a graphic that says:
Saying 'Merry Christmas' to a Jewish person is like
saying 'Happy 4th of July' to someone in England.
You know, because many of the original Christians left Judaism, and many of the original European-Americans left England.
If you prefer Blessed Yule over Happy Solstice, I'll wish you a Blessed Yule.
