Re: Interesting spam email headers

I'll go for safety-minded. emoticon I could easily determine who views an email if they have images enabled, and I know how to track clicks, so I can tell you without a doubt that it isn't just paranoia to be careful about these things. Even if you copy and paste a link into your browser, you can't always guarantee that it won't provide some kind of tracking information to the destination site, so if the URL has a string that looks like it could contain encrypted information, it's best not to chance it.

Knowledge is key. The more knowledge you have about something, the better equipped you are to determine whether it's safe or not. If you're not sure, it's better to avoid it, and I wouldn't call that paranoid at all.

Before anyone gets too paranoid, clicking on a link at a website won't divulge your email address to anyone. Clicking on a link inside an email you receive, however, can.

Clicking on a link at a website can be bad for other reasons, though. If the link is spam, then the spammers will know the link was effective, and may target your site for more spam in the future. Other times, the link can lead to a site that has malware.

So, no, you're not being paranoid. emoticon

Always good to know, that I can be a lot of strange things, but paranoid is not one of them! emoticon

No, I definitely don't see any real signs of paranoia from you.

Paranoia is when you believe the snow we've been getting is all fake and poisonous and caused by our government (I actually discovered this silly -- and very false -- claim yesterday). Paranoia is believing the government is planning to send half its citizens to "death camps," that the moon landing never happened, that our government blew up the World Trade Center, that the Pentagon wasn't hit by a plane, that Obama's real name is Barry and he was born in Kenya, or that we all need to wear tinfoil hats to keep aliens from reading our minds. Paranoia is Glenn Beck believing demons are are the reason cable companies won't carry his show (never mind the fact that he's too conservative even for Faux Noise), or pretty much anything Alex Jones proposes.

Paranoia is believing there's a big conspiracy between cosmologists, geologists, physicists, biologists, etc., etc., etc., who all agree that the universe has been around for a hell of a lot longer than a mere 6018 years. Paranoia is being 100% convinced of something you would deem bad, despite all available evidence 100% proving those beliefs to be false.

Being aware of the fact that someone can verify your email address if you click on a link you receive in an email is not paranoid.

Being aware of the fact that someone can verify your email address if you load an image they send you in an email is not paranoid.

Being aware of phishing and identity theft, and taking precautions to prevent both is not paranoid.

If a spammer posts a link on a website and someone clicks on it, the page where the link was posted will show up in the website's logs. This is the biggest reason why nobody should ever click on a spam link.

You have enough knowledge to be reasonably cautious. More knowledge could help you determine more easily when something is safe and when it isn't, but at least you have enough knowledge to understand what you should be cautious of. At least, I think you do. emoticon

 emoticon Thanks!
And HOLY CRAP....after those "paranoid" examples...I'm so glad I'm NOT paranoid!
However, I'm a bit freaked out.......because THOSE people are alive on this Earth with us...they are on our roads in cars, they are promoting this crap and making others believe it!! emoticon
