Re: Funerals

Even if someone tells me they saw something happen and describe it, I'll accept that they saw the event but if I retell it, I'll always add that I was told whatever happened from the point of view of someone else who saw it.

I'm like that, too. When I re-tell a story, I try to make a point of saying "so and so said this happened," instead of "this happened."

None of those have ever stood up to proper rigorous testing, so my eyes continue to glaze over when I hear people saying "oh she's a Virgo, that's why she's that way." Sigh!

I joke about being a gemini, telling people I have more than just two personalities.

LOL. When they ask me, I say that I'm an Aries and I rule. People who believe in that crap tend to get all "you must be hard to live with" when I say I'm an Aries. I suppose I am, but that's not because of where the stars were when I was born, that's because I don't take crap from other people.

A guy I dated for 9 months in high school was a Taurus, and he was pretty bull-headed. He died in 2009, at the age of 38. I bet astrologers never would have predicted that a potassium overload would kill him. At least, that's what a mutual friend told me.

I am interested in having a "green burial" but when I looked it up I could only find three places in the Toronto GTA that do them, and they have their own way of doing it that still involves a casket, which annoys me. I try to consider how far my kids would come to visit me too, but I really do want a completely green burial. I saw one on television that took place somewhere in New York State. I thought it was amazing. The deceased was on a byre of fir tree branches in top of a wide plank with handles for the pallbearers. She had a sheer sheet over her (the proper name for it escapes me at the moment), and once they put her in the grave, plank and all, they covered her with more fir tree branches before the grave was filled in. That is the way I would want to be planted.

Have you looked at ecofuneral?

http://ecofuneral.ca/61/Burial.html

Under the Green Burial heading:

We can help you find cemeteries that offer burials with no burial vault or in some cases, no casket at all.

I think a green funeral sounds like a great idea. The only drawback I can see is, if you're not embalmed, they might have to bury you within 24 hours, which could make it harder for some people to make it to the funeral. However, I've read that some funeral homes will actually live stream the funeral through a password-protected stream, for anyone who has to travel and can't make the distance in time.

If you can't get buried without a casket, maybe you can check into using a natural wicker one like the one pictured here:

Bodies can be refrigerated without embalming to keep them fresh for a viewing and funeral.
