Re: Defending our freedoms

While I often disapprove someone "being a snitch" (without fair enough reason), when an adult deals with kids this is smart:

Video Game Reviewer Is Contacting the Mothers of Her Online Harassers

Cool hair, btw.

Though it's actually sad that this is news...

Awesome! emoticon That's one thing Facebook's privacy issues can be good for: finding harassers' mothers! emoticon I wonder if the other three moms had talks with their sons, even though they didn't respond to her. I sure hope so!

Maybe people who get threats on YouTube should disable YouTube comments, share their videos on Facebook, and put a link in the YouTube description that points to where they shared it. If it isn't easy to figure out who their mom is, or if their mom isn't on Facebook, they can try to find someone else in their friend list who can get the message through. Maybe this can work for some of the adult harassers, too.

Thanks for sharing that, Kaunisto! emoticon

“Our so called ‘threats’ were just small pranks, and not much different than things you see on the internet every day. If I was receiving these death or rape threats online I would have just brushed them off because I’m clearly more mature than her. But she crossed the line, though, by telling my mom about it. Something you learn at a very young age is to never be a tattle tale. She obviously missed that important lesson,” stated one of the young gentlemen.

I actually hope the court decides on HER account, because of this:

During school these boys are now looked at in a different light as their classmates are making it hard to socially mingle with them. Some of the young women especially seem to keep their distance because they believed the boy’s harmless prank should actually be taken seriously.

YES! Girls should take their words seriously, even though no harm was actually done. NO ONE knows how far they WOULD HAVE gone...and I'd rather be a tattle tale, than a rape victim...
This is bullying plain and simple and should NOT be taken lightly.... emoticon

Dammit, teaches me to check my sources.

Q: Is this a video game satire/humor website?

A: Yes, all of our stories are fake to put a little humor into the gaming community. We aren’t trying to troll you, but we are trying to make you smile.

Totally had me...

Emphasis mine:

The boys who sent the threats, and don’t want their names posted due to privacy concerns, are going to take Ms. Pearce to court on grounds of defamation, along with being a tattle tale and a goody two shoes.

That's the point where I would have figured it was satire. The headline said she was "to appear in court," but there's no way that nonsense would have made it to court.

Sadly, that satirical article does reflect a lot of people's attitudes about harassment, and especially online harassment. It's illegal to make such threats, and it should actually be easier to prosecute someone when there's a record of those threats, whether written or on video, than it would be if it was just a he-said she-said. But even though it's technically possible for authorities to track people down through their IP, it seems like online threats are taken less seriously than offline threats, even when the victim's real name is known to the public. I don't know if it's a case of the authorities being too incompetent and/or too apathetic to track the perpetrator down, but I bet I could do it if I had the power to serve subpoenas to the appropriate online services and the perpetrator was using their own internet connection.

I took that as a joke thrown in a news story. In my defence, I went to that article from a credible gaming site (same one I got the first article), where rarely are links to satire articles and they are systematically marked with *SATIRE!*.
Where as this one wasn't and the link was soon removed, suggesting some actual professional was fooled too.

I think there's just so much going on online that it would be like hunting jaywalkers. Plus when many of them are in another country...

Good point. A lot of comedians with talk shows will talk about the news and throw those kinds of jokes in there. Maybe I just didn't think of it that way because you already said it was satire before I read it.

The fact that that link was posted at a credible gaming site without being marked as *SATIRE!* when satire is usually labeled that way is scary; not on the part of the person who linked to it, but because there are a lot of bullies out there who seem to believe it's perfectly fine to threaten someone, and that the victim somehow deserves it.
