In MicroSucks Hell

(If this ain't the right forum, feel free to move it.)

Okay . . . . A couple of weeks ago my windows update informs me that my windows is counterfeit. The place that built it is no longer around, and I didn't know who to go to for help. A friend of mine told me to call Microsoft, so I did. They helped me install the XP upgrade I had bought for the old computer that was dying. I had to uninstall the Service Pack 2 before I could upgrade. During the upgrade I got two warnings of missing DLLs, and the person on the phone said to just go on with the upgrade.

I was able to get online before the upgrade, but I couldn't afterwards. I was told to contact my ISP techs to fix the problem. I figured out where the missing DLLs went. One went to the Remote Assistance thingy, and the other to my DSL modem. Great! I couldn't find the DSL software/drivers among the CDs that came with the built CPU, and went to my sister's house to google the company and find some info. I found a phone number to call and got an recorded message stating the phone was disconnected.

I kept looking at the 4 CDs that came with the CPU in hopes of a miracle. Okay, one CD said "Drivers & Utilities", but it was pink and had a list of fluff items listed, such as "AdobeReader" etc. But I decided to stick it in the drawer and see what I would find on it. WooHoo! The Modem works were there, and I reinstalled them. The first time I had the DSL turned off, so I turned it on and did the reinstall once again. I got online for a brief second, and the home page popped up, and then I saw Whoosh. Crap! Nothing else after that. So, anyhoo, the ISP guy called and had me perform a few things and it turned out that my PC-cillin firewall had gone from medium protection to high and was blocking most everything. Cool! I'm back online and all is well.

I still got a warning about the Remote Assistance thingy from time to time, so I googled the thing and found the fix. Problem solved. Now all that was left was the windows updates to redownload ---- only, I find I can't install the Service Pack 2. I find a step-by-step instruction list and do it, and last night the Service Pack 2 finally downloaded and installed. Hooray! But now my computer no longer talks to my battery back up or my IntelliPoint Mouse. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I've unplugged both the keyboard and mouse several times and restarted the computer and then plugged them back in. I've unplugged them, and then uninstalled them from the Hardware Device Manager, then restarted the computer and plugged them back in and restarted the computer again. The mouse will not work. It does light up a couple of times during startup, but goes out and stays out when the desktop shows up. emoticon

I'm having to use an old mouse that only has the left and right buttons, and nothing else. I am sooooooooooo in hell right now. Both the battery backup and keyboard/mouse are plugged into the same usb device, and I'm wondering if that is what I need to uninstall and reinstall to get both working again. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. I think I'll take a break and google for more info later on.

Damn, Jox! I think I would've pulled all my hair out if I had to go through all that! emoticon

I take it you have an optical mouse. Is it cordless as well? If it's cordless, is there a button on the receiver? My cordless is a keyboard/mouse combo, and I haven't used either in quite a while due to them eating too many batteries, so I don't remember if the button has anything to do with the mouse or if it only affects my keyboard.

Did you check for hardware conflicts?

Start » Control Panel » System » Hardware » Find your mouse

On the Resources tab, it should tell you if there are any hardware conflicts. On the General tab, it has an option to troubleshoot.  I've never found their troubleshooter to be helpful, but it doesn't hurt to try.

I don't have any other ideas at the moment. emoticon

The keyboard has two plugs that connect to the computer. One is the old plug, the other is a usb plug. I kind of doubt the keyboard would be working if not for the old plug. The mouse has a usb plug and is plugged into a usb socket on the keyboard. And since the mouse isn't working, I figure it's because the keyboard's usb plug isn't working. I've no idea why the mouse lights up two flashes then stays off during start up. But that gives me hope that when I get it figured out, these devices will work again. The problem is figuring out where the disconnect lies. :shakeshead:

I just hope this is the only things that went wrong when the Service Pack 2 uploaded onto my computer. I sure don't want to find other surprises later on. I might forget what caused the problem. emoticon

Okay, the comments on both the keyboard & mouse is that they are working properly, and have no conflicts. And the troubleshoot has not been helpful as of yet. :pullshairout:

I don't put any faith in that troubleshooter, but it could surprise me at some point.

I was just thinking about the conflicts, and I wonder if it would sense one without the mouse being plugged in. Do you know how to navigate through those menus without your mouse, using the arrow keys, shift+tab/tab, and the +? Oh, and I'm sure you know how to use the Windows key to bring up the start menu first, but I'll mention it just in case.

Is your keyboard currently plugged in via the old plug? If so, did the mouse ever work while the keyboard was plugged in via the old plug? I'm not sure if this would make a difference or not, but any change in the way things are hooked up should be considered.

I hope you can figure this out soon, and I hope nothing else goes wrong after you get your mouse working again. But look on the bright side, if something else does happen, you now have a record in this thread of everything that's happened so far. emoticon

I just wish I had an idea of why your mouse isn't working. emoticon

Everything is as it's always been before the reinstall of SP2, and it worked fine then. (Just as I could get online before the upgrade, and not after.) I'd also like to get the battery backup talking to the computer again too. It shuts down windows safely when the lights go out.

I know there has to be a fix somewhere. I just have to find it. As with everything else, it'll probably take me a couple of days to find the answer. I think better after I've settled down. emoticon

I'm sure it's something simple. It usually is.

Re: In MicroSucks Hell

Speaking of mouse problems, I've had issues with my cursor jumping across the screen. It can be fine for hours, then suddenly go all berzerk. Now, this can commonly happen with optical mice if a hair gets stuck under the eye or a bright red mousepad is used, but I've been using a BALL mouse. I tried changing mice in the past, but it did the same thing regardless of which mouse I had plugged in. Then for no apparent reason, one day it just didn't do it anymore and all was fine.

This lasted probably a week or more, then suddenly started acting up again today. I changed mice, not expecting it to make a difference, but it actually did! I thought it might be the port, maybe it needed a jiggle or something, so I changed mice back and it went haywire again. Put the 2nd mouse back in, and all was fine.

So now we're both using a mouse we don't like. emoticon

I spent several hours in the past searching for a solution to my problem and even posted at a board where people seemed to know quite a bit about home PC technical issues, but nobody had the answer I needed.  I wish I knew as much about the intricacies of home PCs as I do about programming and internet security, because I might have a chance of figuring out both of our problems if I did.  You already tried the unplug/uninstall/plug in/install, which is probably the best thing I could have suggested.

When I posted my question here, one of the people posted a link to some basic computer maintenance tips that you (and anyone) might find helpful.  Have you tried using chkdsk/scandisk?

I discovered today that none of the USB slots are working. Grrrrrrr. So uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard and mouse won't do a thing if it's the USBs. emoticon I guess I should try the uninstall/reinstall with them. I fear doing anything else. I think I may call tech support and have them walk me through it. :shakeshead:

The cursor berserker thing happens to me at times. It usually happens when I pick up the mouse to place it in a different spot on the tabletop. (Such as when I get too close to the edge of the table, but still need to move it in the same direction to get the cursor to go where I want it to go.)

I don't even have to have my hand on the mouse for it to start going haywire.  I can be reading a long web page and it just does it whenever it feels like it.  After making that last post, I've had other oddities start to happen.  The cursor keeps stopping for a couple of seconds at a time when I'm trying to move it, and sometimes I will hear a beep when it stops. emoticon  I might try switching to my cordless optical and see what, if anything, it decides to do. emoticon

I guess it's good news that you found a problem with the USBs, if it's just a matter of uninstalling and reinstalling them.  I hope this seemingly simple task doesn't present more problems, such as the misplaced DLLs during the upgrade, and I hope that fixes your current problems.  I'll keep my fingers crossed... emoticon

Good News!!!

I googled and found this page. All but one of the USB devices stated that they were working okay. The one stated it wasn't installed, and wasn't needed. Since it had said it wasn't needed, I took it at its word and left it alone. Thankfully, I found this page and did as instructed, and now all is well. WooHoo!

I hope that is the end of my problems with this whole mess!

BTW: I may have to disappear very soon. Severe thunderstorms are all around me.

The worst part about this whole thing is I could have had it all solved in one day if I'd known then what I learned over the past couple of weeks. emoticon Oh well, I guess maybe there was a lesson I needed to learn, and hopefully I learned it so I don't have to repeat this whole thing all over again.
